“I love you, Big Brother”
Bei bestem Wetter machte sich der Abiturjahrgang 2025 vor den Osterferien mit zwei Bussen auf den Weg zur Paderhalle, um die englischsprachige Aufführung von 1984 zu erleben. Mit nur fünf SchauspielerInnen und einem minimalistischen Bühnenbild wurde die dystopische Welt von George Orwell eindrucksvoll zum Leben erweckt. Die allgegenwärtige Überwachung durch die Telescreens und das Verbot von Emotionen und Liebesbeziehungen wurden beklemmend realistisch dargestellt und hinterließen einen bleibenden Eindruck.
Da 1984 eine Ergänzung zum abiturrelevanten Thema „Utopia and Dystopia“ ist, konnte die Aufführung ideal im Unterricht vor- und nachbereitet werden. Ein Englischkurs schrieb beispielsweise im Anschluss an die Vorstellung ein review, in dem ein Schüler seine Eindrücke folgendermaßen festgehalten hat:
“I love you, Big Brother” is a quote from the theatre play 1984 that shows a dystopian world where free thinking is not allowed, and everything is under surveillance. With five actors one was able to explore this world and the story of Winston that takes a turn for the worse after he decides to fight against the system.
The story, originally written by George Orwell, could not be more relevant to our own world. The topics of surveillance and free thinking are talked about a lot, and this is why one should watch this theatre play. One could say that the theatre play, with its singing and its special portrayal of the story, is a rather weird one at first, but it fits perfectly with the plot and underlines the topics that are shown.
All in all, I think it is a theatre play worth watching. But even if one might not like modern theatre as much, they should know the story by George Orwell because of its current topics.
